Cruising the River Nile is more than just another holiday, another cruise even... it's an almost mystical experience. Booking a river Nile cruise however, is not such a mystical experience and as with any purchase (particularly a holiday), it’s nice to have at least some idea of what to expect.

Although the paddle steamers and Agatha Christie style explorers are a thing of the past, you can at least console yourself with the fact that you can now enjoy the ancient world with modern comforts.

The Valley of the Kings.

The purpose of this site is to inform others wishing to undertake a cruise down the Nile; what you will see (out of the window, on deck and on land), what to take with you, how hot the weather will be, how to avoid that Egyptian belly ache (though we can’t guarantee that one!) and the sometimes difficult art of bartering with local street vendors.

What you won’t find here are papyrus filled pages of historical facts, nor can you book a Nile cruise with us… this site aims to offer a personal perspective for those wishing to book a Nile cruise and as such, you shouldn’t just take our word for it.

A Faluka departing a cruise boat.

It’s worth noting that the ancient world isn’t the preserve of silver surfers and scholars; it is a truly unique experience that can be enjoyed by all. My wife and I are in our late twenties, but what struck us on our first cruise down the Nile was the sheer range of people who are drawn to it’s historic waters.

No matter who you are, the wonders of the Nile will never fail to inspire. We sincerely hope these pages are of use to you... thanks for visiting us!

Edfu

If Edfu is the first stop on your cruise’s itinerary (and for many cruises this will be the case), then you’re in for a real treat. If you’ve only seen pictures of ancient Egyptian monuments before, or perhaps the odd obelisk at the airport, then this is your first real taste of antiquity. Edfu will more wet your appetite; in fact, it will leave you begging for more!

The Temple of Philae

The Temple of Philae, located just south of Aswan, is perhaps one of the most beautiful sites of antiquity along the river Nile and the journey to this island paradise is in itself an unforgettable experience. Agilika Island is only accessible via boat, but this is no bad thing! In fact, the journey to The Temple of Philae is one of highlights of a Nile cruise.

Luxor Temple

What will strike you first about Luxor Temple is that it lies at the very heart of the city, which bustles around it in seeming disregard for such hallowed ground. Whilst you don’t exactly get that lost temple vibe, the juxtaposition of ancient temple and modern city is quite interesting in itself and Luxor, unlike Cairo is a far less imposing city.

An oldie... but a goodie. Although this ad on behalf of the Egyptian Tourist Board is fairly old now, it's still a great sell and was one of the first things that got me interested in booking a Nile River cruise.

Anti-bacterial Gel

An absolute essential for your luggage is an anti-bacterial hand gel or spray like you find in hospitals. These come in small bottles that fit easily in your pocket. Use them EVERYWHERE you go… after the toilet, before you eat and especially after handling the local currency. The paper the notes are printed on literally acts as a sponge for bacteria, putting you on the fast track to the infamous Egyptian belly if you handle them without due care.

Pickpockets

Keep your wallets, purses and other valuables in a safe place, especially in crowded places such as the markets. The markets in particular are places in which pickpockets are known to operate. A red-faced tourist with a bulging trouser pocket is an easy target and the persistent nature of street vendors can put you off your guard.
